Pilates, Physioball and core stability programs

What Is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise regime designed to stimulate the deep spinal muscles, or “core muscles” to function more efficiently. The Pilates exercises were initially developed to assist people with rehabilitation from injury, and Pilates exercises still maintain a specific focus on injury management and prevention.
However, even people without injury can benefit from the Pilates program, through increasing abdominal muscle tone and stability, increasing strength and flexibility, improving posture, and reducing unnecessary and inefficient muscle patterns.

How Does “Clinical Pilates” Differ from “Pilates”?
Unfortunately a lot of “Pilates” exercises have lost their original focus, and have become almost purely strength based exercises. For many people with back pain, gym based exercises can simply aggravate their condition.
Clinical Pilates is always conducted with the supervision and guidance of a physiotherapist, and the program is developed with specific reference to your posture, flexibility, strength, current or past injuries, and specific occupational, recreational, or sporting goals.

What Can Pilates Do For You?

Increase

  • Core Muscle Contraction
  • Ability To Exercise Without Pain
  • Tone
  • Postural Awareness
  • Muscle Efficiency
  • Quality of movement

Decrease

  • Pressure And Stress On The Spine
  • Pain
  • Injury Risk
  • Fatigue During Exercise

Who will benefit from Pilates?
Basically everyone can benefit from Pilates due the specific nature of the exercises – they are designed to suit your individual characteristics and requirements.
Pilates will specifically benefit those with spinal pain, people wanting to “tone up” or participate in safe low impact exercises, and sporting participants.

Why Is An Initial 1:1 Session Required?
This is what helps to make Pilates “Clinical” – we need to conduct a basic assessment and screening, and from this develop your specific program.
The Initial Session involves full explanation of all the Pilates principles, and you do get to participate in Pilates and obtain home exercises during this session.

What Options Are there With Pilates?
We conduct one on one up to four on one group classes. Once people have an appropriate program and are safe with their Pilates exercises, they are able to hire the Pilates equipment for individual use (similar to our gym memberships).

What's a physioball?
A physioball (also known as a swiss ball) is a large diameter PVC ball used for exercises designed to strengthen, stabilize and increase mobility through the pelvic and lower back regions.

What for?
One of the greatest benefits of a Pilates or Physioball program is that it reduces your dependence on health professionals during your rehabilitation or training. Most exercises can be performed in your own home, and many people use their physioball as a chair at work.
