Injury Prevention and Screening

Screening for Injury Prevention

At SSPC, your Physiotherapist can use specific tests to analyse your body’s movements to determine weakness, imbalances or a lack of joint range. This can help in screening you for signs of an injury before it develops as a result of your chosen sport or activity.

Screening looks at the body’s movements that may be required for particular sports and compares your capabilities in reference to where someone of your gender, age, size and shape should be. At SSPC, our tests are derived by obtaining information from sporting institutes and national sporting leagues on their injury rates. We combine this with our experience in the field of sports physiotherapy to develop tests that are specific for your sport.

What tests are used?

  • Biomechanical Analysis of Movement
  • Palpation of areas of common injuries
  • Strength tests
  • Flexibility tests
  • Muscle control tests
  • Co-ordination tests
  • Balance tests
  • EMG and movement sensors with Vimove

Your physio then compares test results to norms in elite population for gender, age and size.

Why be screened?

Almost all elite sporting clubs now screen their players to detect injuries early and prevent them occurring. Physiotherapists at AFL football clubs are at the forefront of screening as they would often test their players before each training session. They will also screen young prospective players prior to drafting them into the club.

Screening is useful if you:

  • are prone to injuries
  • have an injury you haven’t been able to shake or fix completely
  • are coming back to sport after a lay off
  • are about to increase your activity levels or start a new activity
  • have had surgery
  • have sustained an injury that put you on crutches
  • have a growing body

Contact Reception at any of our three clinics and advise them if you want to book a screening appointment with your Physiotherapist.

We work closely with you and carry out research to understand your needs and wishes.
